Mx Amber Alex (she/it)<p>God I hate hate <em>hate</em> how obsessedly self-referential modern Trek is.</p><p>The USS Nog. Bringing Data back for the twentieth time. Guinan origin story. Archer Space Dock. Whatever Lower Decks has going on in every episode (Quark, Tom Paris merch, Nick Locarno, the Pakleds, etc).</p><p>It feels like they're trying so hard. Too hard. It feels like they have nothing original to bring to the table so they constantly wink wink nudge nudge reference the old series, oh please love us we are so authentic, we are so Trek, look we have jokes that only people who watched every episode ever will understand. We can read Memory Alpha please love us.</p><p>It's sickening.</p><p>Did TNG do that? Yes, for the first season. The worst season. But after that? Constant Kirk references in each episode? Spock merch in Picard's ready room and McCoy quotes from Crusher? I think not.</p><p>DS9? They did the traditional hand-off with Picard in the first episode, but after that, virtually no references to other shows with the sole exception of Sisko's Borg trauma.</p><p>Voyager? One singular episode, and for an anniversary at that, that harked back to <em>The Undiscovered Country</em>, and one off-hand mention about the Khitomer Accords. That's about it.</p><p>Even fucking Enterprise, which was a goddamn prequel whose foregone conclusion was setting up TOS, restrained itself. "Regeneration" brought back the Borg, and it's one of the worst episodes of that show. They mention "gee would sure be swell if we had a Prime Directive" once or twice, but other than that, it's remarkably decoupled from TOS.</p><p>But Lower Decks has people namedropping Odo and bringing back tons of old characters and gimmick aliens for more, has a flanderised Riker as a major character, and the main characters fangoober about every character from the old shows. Picard brought back every major and minor character from shows past and then killed them off.</p><p>Get some fucking ideas of your own or GTFO. If Rick fucking Berman the disgusting creep and Brannon fucking Braga Mister "I don't like Star Trek, really" can write shows that enrich the Star Trek universe with new ideas and stories that seamlessly integrate with the rest without citing Memory Alpha at every turn, then Alex "I wish I was making Star Wars instead" Kurtzman can do it, too.
