En zal dit spoedig ver-💯-voudigen: “This will be a defining year that determines if we’re on a path towards many hundreds of millions and eventually #billions of AI #glasses." 🌍 Wie zal het zeggen...

Voor de feature-lovers onder ons 🛍️: Meta's nieuwste bril kan foto's nemen, video opnemen, live-streamen (op #Instagram, mits verbonden met je telefoon), is een vervanger voor je oordopjes, streamt podcasts en muziek, kan je mee bellen etc etc, én komt - natuurlijk - met een forse dosis AI🧚‍♂️. Die je desgewenst alles vertelt over wat je ziet of wilt weten:

'Ray-Ban owners can ask Meta’s AI assistant to tell them about anything they’re looking at💥, which results in the glasses taking a photo and uploading it to the #cloud. They can ask Meta AI what a street sign says, have it translate text, and even ask it to come up with #recipes based on what the camera can spot in their ❄️ fridge.'

Dat klinkt veelbelovend, maar volgens gebruikers raakt Meta's AI nog best vaak van slag 🙀 bij het herkennen van een simpel object. Dat dan wel weer... Overigens krijgt de nieuwste release 'a visible recording #indicator, and will block any photo and video capture if a user tries to cover that indicator light in any way.'

Bruce Davie
My Fediverse Report Card

As Larry noted last week, we have started to comb through our four-plus years of newsletters in an effort to assemble a book-length collection that captures the essence of the Systems Approach. I was struck by how much we have written about centralization and decentralization, and how our views on this topic have evolved over the years. Out with Web3, in with the Fediverse.

It’s more than two year since I joined the Fediverse, so it seems like a good time to review how it’s going. I’m going to consider the broad definition of the Fediverse that contains all the ActivityPub-powered systems such as Pixelfed and Bookwyrm, not just the well-known microblogging platform known as Mastodon. And I will address other federated social media such as Bluesky and Threads in a moment. Like many people, I was drawn to the Fediverse in late 2022 when the ownership of Twitter changed hands and its full embrace of toxicity and misinformation became inevitable.

In my earlier post about the wonders of the Fediverse I talked about the power of federation as an antidote to centralization. Just as the Internet itself has thrived because of the loose coupling between autonomous systems–something designed in from the outset–the Fediverse benefits (it might be too early to say it is thriving) from the loose coupling among all the servers or instances that make up federated social media. And a critical ingredient that enables federation is well-defined, stable protocols by which instances communicate with each other. In the case of Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc., the protocol that powers federation is ActivityPub. Bluesky, the most significant alternative approach to federated social media, uses AT Protocol, for reasons outlined in a blog post.

As someone who spent a good chunk of his career designing protocols, it might be argued that I focus on them too much, so I was pleased to see the central role of protocols in federation spelled out recently by Cory Doctorow. The key quote is this:

In other words, to resist enshittification, you have to impose switching costs on yourself.

Enshittification has been the word of the year in several round-ups (we called it in 2023) and there is more to the concept than simply making a service worse because you can. A central feature of enshittification is that you can make a service worse for customers (or suppliers, see Amazon) and get away with it because the switching costs for the customer/supplier are too high for them to leave. So the point that Doctorow is making here is that Bluesky could make itself resistant to enshittification if they made the switching costs low enough. Make it easy for users to leave, and you give yourself an incentive not to enshittify. If you read the AT Proto specs you could easily come away with the impression that Bluesky has done just that. But as explored in greater depth by ActivityPub editor Christine Lemmer-Webber, there are big, centralized components to Bluesky that are about as easy to replicate as it is to build a competing search engine to Google. So the problem with Bluesky is not that it doesn’t support federation in theory with a set of well-specified protocols; it’s that the architecture seems to be poorly suited to the sort of broad decentralization that is prevalent in the Fediverse. And so the millions of people on Bluesky might just find themselves stuck without an exit in the event that the service there deteriorates the way other large social media have already done. This is not the end of the story, but it certainly gives me pause.

By contrast, ActivityPub has successfully demonstrated that federation among thousands of independent instances can work, and people routinely migrate their accounts from one instance to another. This is not a perfect process: followers and followed accounts are supposed to seamlessly migrate when an account is moved, but this doesn’t seem to be entirely reliable. Content (e.g., posts) in the old account absolutely gets stranded when a user moves. (This latter problem is potentially addressed in Bluesky, as it has been in research projects on content-addressable networks; theoretically it could also be solved for ActivityPub one day.)

Giving End Users Control

My conclusion, like Doctorow’s, has been that I should stick with the Fediverse and Mastodon for all its flaws. Before I get onto those flaws–this is a report card after all–let me mention some things that I like about Mastodon specifically.

The whole design process of Mastodon seems to be very thoughtful and user-centric. For a good example of this, see the current discussion on implementing quoted posts. Rather than roll out something that mimics Twitter, there was a long debate, informed by research, about how to implement the feature in a way that didn’t degenerate into the same sort of negativity seen on other platforms.

Lists. You can organise your timeline by putting people into lists, but even better, you can then remove all content from those lists from your “home” timeline. So, for example, I follow a lot of people who post about US politics, for which I have a morbid fascination. These days it is best for my mental health to be able to keep all that content out of my main feed, knowing I can delve into it if some event warrants the attention. The bigger point here is that user control over your feed is an important feature in social media that doesn’t use centralized algorithms to deliver “viral” content.

Filters. You can filter on various keywords, opting for the filtered content to disappear completely or just be hidden by a warning. Simple stuff but it has massively improved my feed.

Content warnings. You can hide a post behind a content warning so that other people don’t see it unless they click on the warning. The wording of the warning can be anything. I recently used one to warn about a bit of strong language that had been used in a funny context. If anything, the warning increased engagement on the post.

ALT text. There are easy ways to add ALT text to images in Mastodon posts, and a strong culture has developed that this should be the norm. Some apps will warn you if you are about to post an image without ALT text. (Some users will tell you after the fact, see below.) I enjoy writing the ALT text for my posts and visually impaired people occasionally post about how much they value it. Consideration for others seems to have emerged as a core value of Mastodon.

Now, it should be noted that there are plenty of irritations on Mastodon, some of which have proven overwhelming for some users. Mastodon is a place where most users seem to have either installed Linux, contributed to Linux, or in one case, invented Linux. So if you ask a question about Windows, there is a good chance that you will get some replies telling you to use Linux. This can get tiresome and it goes beyond operating systems topics. An example from the “Stochastic Parrots” author Timnit Gebru:

I’m telling you someone literally DM’d me to inform me about my grammar on my post talking about how the mansplaining on this platform was “off the roof.”

The problem is that I should have said “off the charts” or “through the roof.”

Someone saw my post about mansplaining, and then made the decision that the best thing to do is spend the time to construct a direct message kindly informing me about the grammatical issues with that post.

People here truly can’t help themselves.

There is a related phenomenon referred to as the “HOA” (homeowners association): the people who will tell you that you should have used ALT text or should have put a content warning on your post, etc. etc. This hasn’t affected me personally but it’s not hard to see how it might drive some people off the platform.

The usage stats on the Fediverse suggest that while the number of users keeps growing (now over 11 million), active users remain stuck in the 1-2 million range. This is small compared to Bluesky and tiny compared to the centralized services. I’d say these stats reflect the fact that (a) the Fediverse gets relatively little coverage in the mainstream media compared to Threads, Bluesky, and the big social networks; (b) it is viewed as hard to use, with some justification, especially given the need to choose an instance; (c) HOA, mansplaining, etc. drive people away; (d) it takes work to get a useful feed and to get any sort of engagement or following. The other day I posted a nice photo of an owl during a period when #SuperbOwl was trending and I got about 50 engagements, which is about as viral as anything I’ve posted on Mastodon. I can see why organizations that really need a big reach might think twice about giving up on the big platforms.

A word about Threads, the Meta-owned platform that has partially federated using ActivityPub. It is claimed to have over 200 million active users, dwarfing anything else on the Fediverse. Meta’s lack of content moderation is now infamous and puts it at odds with the policies of many fediverse instances, which are consequently defederating. I think the way this has been handled shows the power of the Fediverse. If I was on an instance that didn’t choose defederation from Threads, I’d be moving. I happen to have accounts on two Mastodon instances (one personal, one for Systems Approach) that align well with my values, and that’s what federation promises. It also underscores the importance of being able to migrate between instances.

Finally, I really like the breadth of different applications running on the Fediverse. I have set up accounts on PixelFed (Instagram-like), Bookwyrm (Goodreads) and Peertube (YouTube) and they all work reasonably well. PixelFed has had a moment in the sun recently due to the arrival of a new mobile app that happened to coincide with Meta’s policy changes. There is a lot of great photography over there.

For readers of this newsletter, I think most of you can handle Mastodon’s complexity and the occasional tone-deaf replies of its users–most of us have probably had enough of that in our professional lives to build up a thick skin. I can personally recommend https://discuss.systems for systems people who want a home in the Fediverse, and there is no shortage of “getting started” guides. See you on the Fediverse.

Feditips has a collection of getting started guides for the Fediverse. So does We Distribute, including one on how to set up your own Fediverse server.

Slate has some ideas on what else you can do after leaving X/Twitter.

Another good piece from Cory Doctorow about making the Internet more resistant to enshittification mentions that he is supporting work to make Bluesky less centralized.

When we decided to get off Substack (another problematic centralized platform), we landed on WordPress, but there are many good alternatives, including Ghost.

Our PeerTube presence is a work in progress–here is a video we recorded a while back discussing the future of networking.

#SuperbOwl
