I'm doing a painting for my niece's first birthday, and her mom requested a dragon. I think I've got it in a pretty good place so far.
When my little sister was young she had nightmares, so I drew her a dragon to protect her in her sleep, that's why she asked for a dragon for the munchkin. Gotta design a cheeky little protector for my niece <3 :D
The trick is designing a dragon that'll be non-threatening and fun to a two-year-old, but cool enough for a fast-growing kid at six. I figure I'm gonna have to do a second total redesign somewhere between 10-13 anyway when the munchkin inevitably hits the Edgy Teens, so I also have to leave myself room to evolve the critter into something *painfully* overdesigned :P
Seriously though, it's a surprisingly complex design challenge. It's fun :D
Time to get serious about that painting.
The thing about art is that it's hard to get started, but once I do I'm fine. Aaaaand then it's equally hard to get me to stop.
Something something theory of artistic momentum
Got a little progress today, but I think I gotta put it down for today. I don't feel like I have it today, and it's usually a bad idea to try and push through that if you don't have to.
Painting, Day 76: After forging a path through the right shoulder and arm, we began our descent into the lower torso. We lost good men coming around the scapula, men we cannot replace. But the queen is relying on us to forge a path in these godforsaken wildernesses, and so we must press on. May the lord watch over us as we attempt to paint a goddamn fucking knee.
Making good progress today but I gotta stop or I'm gonna give myself a headache @_@
Okay, good stopping place for tonight. Gonna need tweaking after we render out the fire, but so far so good.
painting eyes is hard enough when you're NOT painting for a one-year-old who is absolutely gonna be developmentally fixated on faces for the next six months @_@
i may be obsessing a bit
Unironically referencing cereal boxes right now, just sayin
Still got some reflected light to deal with in the hair, but I'm pretty satisfied with the eyes and horns. Really dreading dealing with the fire, tho
Alright... Let's tackle the fire on this bad boy :/
Me: Okay, the secret to painting good fire is chaos.You gotta get scratchy and wild with this.
My brain: But this is important! We need to be careful! It has to be perfect!
Me: If it's careful, it won't be perfect.
My brain: *scanners-style explosion*
This is how you stop me if I turn into a MONAD-style murderous computer. This is my logic bomb.
Okay, I think I can live with that fire. It's more complex than I intended, but other than that it's fine.
I need to finish this painting by Tuesday. Please send me your ability to focus, I'm gonna need it. @_@
Now we reach the point where you COULD say okay I'm done, but that would be a mistake
You've just spent five hours working on the painting. You're too close. You can't see the errors anymore. Put it down. Go do something else. Best case scenario, don't look at it until tomorrow. Wait for new eyes.
Art is so fucking stupid. You spend a week painting something and at the end go, "This doesn't look right" and some little corner of your brain says, "Put a little white square over there" and you do it AND IT WORKS
Fucking arcane bullshit 9_9
"When you're working, it's important to remove all distractions so-"
Fuck off buddy, those distractions are load bearing.
"I swear the lighting wasn't this complicated when I started," and other lies artists tell themselves
@CactuarJoe good job cactus
@CactuarJoe looking good so far!
@CactuarJoe good job!
@xerozohar Thanks :D
@CactuarJoe yoooo that's cute!
@xerozohar It's amazing how much visible eyes change things, huh ^^
@CactuarJoe sure! Not that I didn't appreciate the sheer unsettling hollow single color eye sockets.
@CactuarJoe i was just gonna throw big ladies and skeletons at you tbh
@jwisser I mean this would also work :D
@CactuarJoe Ahhh nice and billowy, that's satisfying.
@CactuarJoe setting up the focus transmitter
@CactuarJoe (not that I'll have much to transmit but hey)
@xerozohar All contributions are appreciated T_T
@CactuarJoe wizard garbage
@xerozohar FOR GARBAGE WIZARDS
@CactuarJoe gawd I could not live without my distraction games while I work and stuff.
@xerozohar I tried it a little this morning while painting and let me tell you I have never had to get up and pace around the hallway so many times in an hour.
@CactuarJoe I love ADHD brain
