I am having a hard time telling if a thing is a real actual legitimate email or not.
I got an email yesterday from someone I don't know, but they were using a gmail account with a normal I-can-see-someone-using-this-as-their-username sounding name.
They were trying to reach me about the death of someone with my last name (but not someone I know or think I'm related to, but my last name isn't *weird* but it's not super common either)
There was no "just send your checking account info to me and we'll forward you your inheritance" come-on or anything like that, it was informal and felt like maybe genuine concern.
They emailed me again today, this time from a different account. Still gmail, this time the account actually matches their "real person name" name, which is also a thing I do - I have one burner account and one "official" email account with my name-name on it.
I am naturally skeptical and cautious about this, but I am not sure what the scam would be, at this point, unless it's just setup trying to hook me into revealing real actual info about myself somehow.
Think it would hurt them to reply just to say "Sorry, I think you have the wrong wizard?"
