Ganga
Cookbook browsing today.....

Back to Madhur Jaffrey

Flavours of India: Recipes from Kerala, Goa, Gujarat, Punjab, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, by #MadhurJaffrey

As I've mentioned, my first two books on Indian cooking were by Jaffrey. I was attracted to this one as I had been in Goa and Karnataka on my first trip to India. And oh boy, some of the recipes have become FFFs (Family and Friends' Favourites). Some friends still call me to tell me that they've cooked so-and-so dish, sometimes for guests or for xmas, or just for themselves. ❤️

Thanks Madhur 🙇‍♀️

Plus (and it's a big plus) this book sits flat when open to a recipe, unlike the other Jaffrey cookbook that I have. That one needs to be weighted with my mortar and pestle to sit open.

#CookbookBrowsing #Cookbooks #IndianFood #Food

(There were a few "chicken stock" recipes before that but mostly the non-veg components were easily substituted.)

Her description of the recipes, how she found them, who showed her, where they cooked the dish, the drive there..... All fascinating and make the book very readable.

I am up to a section on the use of chickpeas! Ganga
Cookbook browsing today....

Well, the first two days of Autumn have snapped from hot summer weather with clear skies to nice temps and overcast. (Still no rain.)

So it is perfect timing for this book. I made my first Autumnal soup the other day with white beans and cauliflower. Delicious. Not from this book, but it is the sort of soup that *could* come from this book.

Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison's Kitchen, by Deborah Madison

All but one are vegetarian (one recipe uses bonito flakes)... thanks to Deborah for that - lots of "vegetable" cookbook authors can't resist a considerable number of non-vegetarian dishes. She lets the veg shine!! Ganga
Cookbook browsing today....

Vibrant India: Fresh Vegetarian Recipes from Bangalore to Brooklyn, by #ChitraAgrawal

Another cookbook in the modern, non-traditional Indian food genre. Can I say that this one takes Indian food and twists the dishes to appeal to American tastes? Agrawal is 2nd gen Indian living in Brooklyn, and the book reads like that assimilation of both cultures that is common with 2nd generationals.

So the food is fresh and vibrant, with enough Indian to make it recognisably so, and enough American to make it comfortable for Indian food novices to cook and eat.

I love the Cabbage stir-fry with lemon and curry leaves - Indian cabbage dishes are the best way to treat cabbage imho 😄

#CookbookBrowsing #Cookbooks #IndianFood #Vegetarian #Food
