Self promotion in a small pond is a good way to get a little notice. It's the uncertainty of clearing your throat in a crowded room. Pretty soon you don't need to, and if you do every time you speak, it'll wear thin sooner or later. Organic pruning and negotiation by the crowd over time is most of the solution, maybe?
