I dunno, I feel like the reaction to the Switch 2's price is less about this specific console being super expensive -- it's solidly in the middle of the pack for a modern console --and more about the fact that none of us have any fucking money anymore.
Like, it's less than a PS5 Pro or a XBox Series X, but... I don't own either of those, either. Because I can't afford them.
Because I don't have any fucking money.
:/
And then you add the fee for online play and the fact that updated titles for the system are like $80 and the fact that Nintendo games only go on sale if someone's seen the Grim Reaper, like, actively knocking on an exec's door *that morning*...
Yeah :/
@CactuarJoe I get it, Nintendo’s handhelds always had a certain accessibility to them, both with the consoles and the games. I could still manage to afford them even when I was scraping by. This is bringing it in line with other consoles but leaving the old handheld niche unfilled.
@trixter That's a good point, there really *isn't* a DS/3DS style lower-cost option in the market anymore. People talk about the Switch like Nintendo abandoned making desktop consoles to focus on handhelds but it's really the other way around.
@CactuarJoe @trixter The handheld market is pretty much dead though. It's hard to justify a portable device in a world where everyone is obligated into having a smartphone.
@wheeljack @CactuarJoe That makes sense — in the end, the NGage really did win! — but the retro handheld market seems to be doing really well, and there’s been a boom in popularity for modded and refurbished old systems. I think it’s like vinyl records, the market is no longer “everyone” but it’s still there.
