So fun fact about me: I actually care A LOT about Star Saber, Deathsaurus, and Victory in general. #transformers #VictorySaber #ToyCollecting #RetroAnime
Back in 1995, when I was somehow both the coolest and least cool teenager you knew, a pen pal of mine who drew for my Transformers fanzine sent me a VHS tape of JG1 episodes: three Headmasters episodes in Japanese, one English-dubbed Headmasters episode, and four English-dubbed Victory episodes. At the time, this was GOLD. The Japanese shows!
(I would later share that dubbed Headmasters episode with friends at BotCon... '98 or '99, where it immediately became the biggest meme in alt.toys.transformers history. The English dub is *delightfully terrible*, and Headmasters was this perfect storm of recognizable characters, bad animation, and awkward performances that made it funnier than either of the other dubbed series.)

The first BotCon I went to was just a couple months after I got that tape, and I came home with Star Saber, Deathsaurus, and Leozack. I picked up Victory Leo a year later, and a Breastforce set in '99. Victory wasn't really a very well-written show, but it was *cool*, and the character designs were amazing.
Sadly, I ended up selling those toys over the years when I need help making ends meet. I made a good bit of money off them, but it's hurt not having them.
When I finally started to get my feet back under me financially, Masterpiece Star Saber was one of my biggest toy priorities. I ended up transforming him based on my memory of the original toy while muddle-headed with exhaustion in the lobby at a TFCon, hanging out with old friends.
So for me, these new toys are super special. I love the IDW comics, but my Star Saber will always be the one who wet the bed, and my Victory Leo will always be the one who keeps being confusingly referred to as Optimus Prime.
@trixter yay, they're finally home! congrats!
@trixter This was glorious. Not just the dubbing, but the whole terrible experience :D
But one thing I unironically liked, their base is also a transformer that can transform into a robot when it's time to fight!
@trixter I didn't have the attention span or time to watch more than 3 minutes, but truly bad, ofc.
Laughs galore. "Oh JFC" or not.
Thanks for posting this + the other one seen. I'm trying to comment to remind myself to get to watching more when more caught up with other things.
@ElysiaMacht The dubs are pretty amazing(ly bad)! The same group did a few Shōwa-period Godzilla movies that still occasionally show up on TV, some kung-fu movies from around the same time, and a Toho-produced American release of Macross: Do You Remember Love? that's one of the handful of VHS tapes that will be buried with me.
