The Point Reyes at Low Tide II

The Point Reyes is a weathered and abandoned boat that sits partially submerged in the calm waters of Tomales Bay. It had been a few years since I was last out to visit here. I was really surprised to see how much more she had decayed. The bow is completely severed now and the hull has finally given way to the weight of the cabin.

The Point Reyes At Low Tide II The Point Reyes is an old fishing boat that broke loose from it's dock during a storm many years ago. It washed up onto this sandbar at the south end of Tomales Bay by the town of Inverness. The foreground of the image is the sandbar that the boat came to a rest on many years ago. The boats bow is now crushed. You can see the hull is missing a number of planks. The cabin is leaning as it sits on the now crushed hull. Most of the paint is now gone or heavily faded. Beyond the boat is the still waters of Tomales Bay and the rolling hills of Marin County.

Days like this were rare in the town where I grew up. Prince Rupert is a rainy town, in fact it’s one of Canada’s rainiest towns (third rainiest perhaps). Tucked away in the Great Bear Rainforest, and sandwiched between the mighty Pacific and Mount Hays, clouds are forced to unload the moisture they accumulate during their journey over the ocean if they want any chance of climbing over the mountain and continuing on their journey. At least that’s how I understand it.

That said, the sky is often shrouded in grey clouds, a veil that makes the town and its colourful energy feel hidden. But on days when the clouds part, it’s magical how alive the town becomes. The oceans are bluer, the forests are and the people are even happier than they already were.
